Shot over four mornings in October, mostly before the city woke up. Two bags, no lights, one rule: if the street isn’t helping, move.

No permits. No lights. Two bags and a stylist with very cold hands.

Black-and-white street scene of people crossing a wide avenue between tall buildings
Broadway at Spring St., 7:04 a.m. — the crossing before the crowd.
A model in a long camel wool coat worn open, turning against a pale wall
Black-and-white detail of a grey check blazer and dark trousers, one hand in a pocket
Look 03 — camel wool, worn open. Look 05 — grey check, borrowed from the stylist’s father.
A woman walking alone down a narrow street between tall stone buildings in warm morning light
Dumbo, 7:40 a.m. The light lasts eleven minutes between these two buildings.
Portrait of a woman with dark hair in a grey coat with a shearling collar
Ada, between takes. The best frame of day two.
A Manhattan avenue lined with old brick towers under a heavy, warm-toned sky
Fifth Ave, looking north. Nobody in frame, on purpose.
Black-and-white close crop of a woman in sunglasses pressing a coat collar to her face with both hands
A woman in a dark green coat over a red top, standing in a dim street at dusk
Left: collar up, 6:58 a.m. Right: the one evening we stayed late.
A lone figure standing in the middle of a wet city street with bright haze behind
Our assistant, mid-reload. We kept it.

Notes

We worked with what the city gave us: low sun between avenues, steam from the grates, the first wool coats of the year. The label wanted their autumn pieces to look lived-in, not launched.

Every frame here was made before 9 a.m., apart from one. We cast through friends and paid everyone the same day rate.
